Carefree. Embrace. Joyous. Spritely?
At first blush, these seemed like unusual word choices to me. They aren’t words that I would use to describe anything about our world right now.
But, as Pantone often does with the Color of the Year announcement, the words hooked me and quickly had me imagining a world that could be described with these words. They had me rewriting that script in my head, which is exactly the intent of this history-making, brand-new color.
"Creating a new color for the first time in the history of our Pantone Color of the Year educational color program reflects the global innovation and transformation taking place. As society continues to recognize color as a critical form of communication, and a way to express and affect ideas and emotions and engage and connect, the complexity of this new red violet infused blue hue highlights the expansive possibilities that lay before us”.
Everything about our world has changed in the past 2 years and we have reimagined virtually (pun intended) everything we do on a daily basis. Some of that change was sudden, like the changes we made in March 2020 as the entire world shut down. Some of the change has been gradual over time as we learn to realign our lives around what is important to us and our businesses around changing expectations and consumer behavior. Some of the changes have actually been through many iterations as we continually adapt to evolving conditions.
As I took a moment to think about the message that Pantone is sending with this color, I thought about those unusual word choices again. Carefree. Embrace. Joyous. Spritely.
I want those words to describe our world. I think many of us want that. The question for each of us is how do we go about considering all of our individual possibilities as we continue to rewrite and reinvent our lives, personal and professional?
The color is meant to “encourage personal inventiveness and creativity” and if history is any indication, we will soon see Very Peri creeping into online color schemes, fashion, and the shelves of local stores. I could be cynical about that, but I am choosing to joyously (or possibly, spritely) embrace the addition of Very Peri in my world as a regular reminder to see change not as an obstacle, but as a new possibility.
